Frequently asked questions

We’ve assembled some of the most common questions we’ve been asked about The Book of Divergence.

Your burning questions answered

Nerds! Nerds nerds nerds nerds nerds!

No seriously if you’re a comfortable nerd and love gaming music, Roleplay adventures and don’t mind a little GM railroading here and there, this show is for you!

Matt Frequencies is a nerd who plays nerd music for nerds, and gets the culture. You’ll get memes, you might get invited to play a game, there may be rickrolls and obscure anime references (get in the damn robot, Shinji!), and it’s almost certain there’ll be some classic rock and roll singalongs in there somewhere. Don’t worry, he’s got your back.

This is hard dance music. That means a minimum of 130bpm, usually 150 or higher, Techno, trance, drum and bass, rock and roll, metal, Dubstep… You get the idea.

If you’ve played Crypt of the Necrodancer, think the music from the launch trailer rather than the tutorial. It can get pretty headbangy up in here if The Glitch gets control of things!

On the flip side, Father Matthew still awaits his chance to take you on a euphoric happy hardcore fuelled techno adventure so, maybe support him if that’s your style?

Events are as accessible as we can make them: we keep volumes to a practical level while still getting the groove in on the bass, though we encourage earplugs for those with concerns.

Our lighting, when running our lighting controls, is tuned to avoid rapid extended light flashing sequences, and we do not use flashbulbs/strobes for any sequence – LED controls only, which have a longer cycle time that is safer for epilepsy and the light sensitive ND among us.

Venues are chosen with preference to wheelchair access, and seating is negotiated with the venue to be approximately 10% of the available crowd capacity to provide spaces for people to rest.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss using a wireless headset to listen to the show at your own comfortable volume as we have recently arranged this tech as well! (very limited, sorry – working on it!)

Voting is conducted by show of hands, or for larger crowds a callback aye or nay can be used. Can’t get your hand up that high? Speak to us to make sure your vote gets counted!

The show runs for 60 minutes, give or take a couple minutes (we time it to run under when the performance window is 60 minutes exactly, as may be the case at some festivals).

Allow a little time after to collect your Artefact and fragments if you have chosen to show your Allegiance!

The intention is that each event is a standalone story, however to keep things fresh and interesting for repeat attendees it’s likely you will notice some in-jokes and references to past shows. Where these occur they are generally flavour and aren’t affecting the main story progression, but there have been exceptions.

We email all ticket holders before each show to update on the current story state and to advise any patch notes that have changed mechanics between shows.

Seating is provided at all shows for ACCESSIBILITY PURPOSES. Please treat seats as you would an accessible seat on the train.

This doesn’t mean you can’t sit and rest, we aren’t cruel. Well, The Glitch might be, but we aren’t in general.

This is a DANCE MUSIC event first and foremost – bring comfy shoes and an intention to stomp the floor!

Some shows have seen a mostly seated crowd and while these are still fun and entertaining, they lack the community feeling and closeness we achieve when people get involved – so, should you wish to sit and see a theatre performance, we can recommend a number of musicals that may be up your alley.

Please don’t. Arriving late, you miss establishing storyline. Coming and going, you’ll miss important plot elements that help shape the choices you need to make.

It’s 60 minutes of your time, and we want you to get the best experience out of that 60 minutes – and everyone else at the event too.
